Deadly Cry: An absolutely gripping crime thriller packed with suspense (Detective Kim Stone Book 13) (English Edition) Kindle Ausgabe

4,6 von 5 Sternen 13.593 Sternebewertungen

You have to stop me from hurting anyone else. I don’t want to do these horrible things. Help me before I’m forced to do it again. And I will do it again because I have no choice. I’ve never had a choice.

In a busy shopping centre, a little girl clutches a teddy bear, clinging to it in the absence of her mother, Katrina. Hours later, Katrina’s body is discovered in an abandoned building. For
Detective Kim Stone, it looks like a quick, functional kill. But Kim’s instincts tell her there’s more to this senseless murder than meets the eye. What was the motive for killing a young mother out shopping with her child?

Days later, a second victim is found in a local park, her neck broken just like Katrina’s and her six-year-old son missing.

With her colleague, Detective Stacey Wood, working on another unsolved crime and a member of the team grieving the loss of a close relative, Kim is struggling to make inroads on what is fast becoming a complex case. And when a handwritten letter from the killer lands on Kim’s desk addressed to her, and pleading for help, she knows time is running out to bring the little boy home alive.

With the support of a handwriting analyst and profiler, Kim and the team begin to get inside the mind of the killer and make a shocking discovery.

Some of the victims have scratch marks on their wrists.

But these are no random scratches. The killer is using them to communicate with someone. The question is… with whom?

And if Kim doesn’t find them soon, another innocent soul will die.

The multi-million-copy bestselling Detective Kim Stone series is every bit as addictive, original and exciting as readers say and you’ll be hooked from the very first page. Nobody does it better than the Queen of Crime, Angela Marsons.

Can be read as a standalone.

Kims Team wächst mir immer mehr ans herz, da sind die Verbrechen fast schon nebensächlich. Obwohl die psychologische Variante hier mal was anderes ist. Well done again, angela! der nächste Teil ist schon vorbestellt :)

There is so much going on in Deadly Cry that you think you are dealing with several plots - and then Angela Marsons manages to make everything interconnect and you wonder how she did it.

There are several cases here: active and cold. Two women murdered, one whose child is also missing. Strange scratches carved into the body of one. Kim Stone has to find the murderer and also find the missing child. Stacey is given a old case and begins to suspect that while everyone believes it solved, there is something amiss and there may be a man falsely imprisoned and a killer walking free.

A running theme concerns family dynamics- and we see several families, both broken and forming: the survivors of the murdered women, Penn & his brother Jasper dealing with the death of their mother, Stacey and her fiancée Devon planning their wedding.

We always learn things in this series- here about graphology, about the psychology & motives for murder- this is like taking a course in forensics!

There are red herrings, and as usual in the series, a huge twist that turns everything on it’s head. We see favorite characters return Alison, the profiler, Barney, the Wonder Dog (my favorite), Keats, the pathologist, and the entire squad.

We see the progression of Kim, who started out completely anti-social and who is now showing not only empathy, but a keen understanding of people and how to interact with them- and is trusting her own instincts when dealing with a killer, in spite of disobeying her superiors. She may not shake hands with people, but she can get into their minds.

There are passages that make you cry, as when Penn and Jasper finally accept their mother’s death. I had to put the book aside for a bit after reading that.

But there are also moments that make you laugh: when Kim asks, ” Hey, Keats did you miss me?”, he answers “Only if my aim was off”- I love these moments and they are sprinkled throughout the book to give a pause to the sadness of the cases.

It helps if you have read the series, although each book stands alone. But seeing the progression of the characters and learning their back stories is part of the pleasure you get from the books. A possible love interest is coming for Penn, Stacey has come into her own and solves an old case, Alison looks to become a recurring character. And we are set up for "changes" in store as a teaser on the final page.

Angela Marsons gets better and better with every installment. Deadly Cry is an amazing book, it will stay with you. Can't wait for the next one!

This review needs to start with an apology to JM Dalgliesh (Jason), who had been kind enough to send me a copy of his book, One Lost Soul in a giveaway. The least I could have done would have been to have left a review as soon as I had finished it, while it was still fresh in my mind. The only excuse I have for not doing so is that a parcel containing 'Deadly Cry' had just arrived. And no matter how much of a responsible adult I'm supposed to be, when it comes to a new Angela Marsons book I'm as excited as a six-year-old on Christmas morning. I just have to drop everything and get stuck in. In this case, that signalled the start of a two-day binge read.

The main storyline is a fast-paced one that suits the main character, DI Kim Stone, perfectly. Two mothers, abducted from shopping centres and murdered in quick succession. One young child abandoned, the other vanished. No clues. No clear motive. Until a letter arrives in the post, addressed directly to Kim, apparently from the murderer and pleading for her help. Can she and her team identify the sender in time to prevent more deaths, and to bring the child home alive?

You really do feel everything that Kim goes through. Her determination, which slowly turns to desperation as she enlists the help of a profiler and a handwriting expert. And her frustration, which leads to her lashing out at her team - totally unjustifiably, but equally understandably, as she senses the answer must be staring them in the face but they can't see it.

The thing is though, that the fast pace doesn't over-rule. There are just the right number of little digressions, including accurate descriptions and snippets of information about the town of Quinton, the residential district of Wollescote and the Woodland Trust-owned Uffmoor Wood. All of these places really exist, and they make the story seem so much more real than if fictional place names had been used.

There is also a healthy dose of humour - I smiled at the way Kim blatantly renames the 'Emergency Planning Team' (EPT) as 'INEPT', and laughed out loud at the way she dealt with a scrap merchant who tried to fleece her over a new motorbike frame - and a fair few emotional punches, firstly as Stacey persuades a reluctant rape victim to tell her story, and then as Penn and his brother come to realise that following the death of their mother, they're actually doing the wrong thing by trying to be strong for each other.

What this meant was that during the course of the book I went from holding my breath, to having a lump in my throat, to being dragged back to the edge of my seat, to having something in my eye, to laughing, to being jerked to sit bolt upright again, my whole body rigid with tension. I can't honestly think of any other author who can do this.

Also ... I say this about almost every one of Angela's books. So I'll repeat myself. The character development continues. Stacey has grown from a conscientious but shy 'people-pleaser' into a determined, dedicated and yet compassionate police officer, and it's been wonderful to watch her develop over the course of this series. Kim herself is still brusque, belligerent, ready to trust her instincts over the advice of her superiors and fight her case. But underneath, she has a heart of gold. And we wouldn't want her any other way. I don't think you can really describe the latest book in a series that commonly features serial killers as 'comforting', but if you could, it would somehow be a good word to use.

If I had to nit-pick - and I do - I'd start with the front cover. I didn't particularly like the image of the woman, who I assume is supposed to be Kim, on the cover of Killing Mind and I'm not really any more sold this time round. I don't know why the title had to be changed from Death Score to Deadly Cry at the last minute, but personally I think the former would have been better suited to the book. I appreciate that neither of these issues may be down to the author, but ultimately the cover and title are just as much a part of 'the book' as the pages inside.

Moving inside, there's the point that the solution to the plot seemed a little bit far-fetched, although it's fair to say that I was so thrilled by that point that I really didn't care. And it seemed a shame that we weren't treated to an epilogue featuring Stacey's wedding to her partner Devon.

However, the mere fact that I'm having to mention any of this shows just how deeply into the barrel I'm having to scrape to find anything to criticise. Ultimately, this book is Angie at her best. And that really is saying something.

Oh, and Jason ... I will get round to reviewing your book soon, I promise. But right now, I'm still embracing this reading hangover.
