Über die Autorenschaft und weitere Mitwirkende

C. Marten-Zerf grew up in Africa and went on to become a fellow of Trinity College and an alumnus of Howard College New York. At the age of 16 he was called up to the South African Defence Force and although many of his friends are now dead, he counts among the survivors various soldiers, gunrunners and warlords. He is extremely proficient in the use of most small arms and has been in numerous fatal close-combat situations. There is much in his life that he cannot talk about as it is hidden under the South African official secrets act that he signed in 1982. As a result of these experiences - all of his thrillers are written from either direct knowledge or experience and much is based on actual events. This gives them a unique level of accuracy, reality and poignancy. C. Marten-Zerf now lives in England with his wife, Polly and son Axel. He also writes award-winning fantasy/comedy novels as Craig Zerf.

    Eighty per cent of the time you read a book, finish it, and go "ho hum, at least I finished it". Not with this bloke. You get the feeling that he is writing from experience and the words are real, keeping you glued to the page. No skimming with this book. You want to know and savour every word.
    No perfect heroes here, only faulty ones that have sunk into Dantes Inferno but still retain the will to get out.

    C. Marten-Zerf is a damn good writer! This is a story of violent revenge and horrifying retribution. Every character is presented in careful detail and technicolor. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful. The story takes place in South Africa, and it is clear that the author, who grew up there, knows whereof he writes. The reader is allowed to experience new sights, sounds, and cultures, especially those of the Zulu Tribe. Life in this environment is so hard and ugly and dangerous that we would find it hard to believe, if it weren't for Zerf's totally convincing "I've been there, seen that, done that" presentation.

    "Choice of Weapon" is a tale that takes place in very harsh reality -- but reality it is, no doubt about that. I do not doubt that the kinds of violence and horror portrayed have really happened, and such corruption of souls afflicts the human race everywhere, to one degree or another. In this story, it is pretty much to the nth degree.

    But in Marten-Zerfs hands the violence is in no way gratuitous. Garrett, a mercenary warrior and the protagonist, is either a hero, an avenging angel, or a true monster, and the readers are left to ferret out which is the Truth. Good luck with that. There is no question but what justice was done, but at what cost? To the warrior who metes it out, and to those who travel with him.

    For the record, I am a 74-year-old woman. I was rather surprised that when reading this book I rarely if ever flinched and I could not put it down -- both a tribute to the author,. I gave it a 5-star rating without pause, but I do not know many people to whom I would recommend it, especially women. Considering the atrocities that go on in today's world under the guise of patriotism or religious fervor (and certainly not just on foreign soil, but in the streets and churches and political milieus of my own country) I think it is my duty always to seek, and then to face the truth.

    I have read a number of this author's fantasy novels. And they were pretty good. I did not realise that he also wrote action thrillers. I am not surprised to discover that this novel is also of a high standard. It's not a novel concept of course. A mercenary with peerless skills seeks redemption. What makes it better than a lot of the rest is the setting. When I was younger I read all of Wilbur Smith's early novels and was riveted by his stories and the history of the African continent. This novel was shorter, less detailed, and more action driven. But had similar elements of governmental breakdown, corruption, indifference, and exploitation. The main characters are compelling and retribution is swift. I liked what I read and will continue reading this series....

    Update: I have now read all four books that are currently available in this series. I thought the fourth stretched the bounds of credibility a touch. Hopefully the fifth novel will not take place in outer space. But joking aside, these are easy to read and have great interplay between the two main characters. As kindle unlimited options I can read these all day long. But I would also pay (a reasonable price) to read these, and with all the free stuff available then that is perhaps the bigger compliment. We'll recommended...

    I had never read any books by this author and have enjoyed it immensely. The characters are well documented, the stories are fun and adventurous and the imagery gives a true feeling of being in the book. Any one who enjoys action packed reading will appreciate these books.
